When Egypt was struck with the plague of frogs… Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron with a request to pray and put an end to the plague. “Moses said to Pharaoh, I leave to you the honor of setting the time for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs…” to which Pharaoh responded “Tomorrow”. Exodus 8:8-10. How about Now?! A hardened heart blinds you to solutions or quick breakthroughs in one’s life.
How could Pharaoh have imagined to win a tug of war with God asked one person…to which another responded… ‘You and I are the Pharaoh’s of today … In the mode of rebellion, we resist the ways of God and expect to win’. Likened to a Pharaoh was unsettling …for a Pharaoh will always be humbled by God.
Hardening one’s heart against God’s ways does not happen in a day, but overtime…and like an oak or mvule tree with very strong roots… so does hardness firm up in one’s heart who downplays God’s Word and resists God’s teachings. Some of the destructive fruits from this tree are… being an advocate against God’s teaching, thus applauding wrong and deriding what is right; and accepting the lies of the enemy which amount to ‘you are also a god’… Pharaoh believed this lie ….and when God raised his hand against him…terror struck the hearts of whoever heard of what God had done.
Is there anything in your life that God is cautioning you against, convicting you about…and your response has been ….either NO or You will do it tomorrow; Put right tomorrow; Stop doing it tomorrow; Make amends tomorrow etc? We do not have a guarantee for tomorrow….therefore “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” Hebrew 4:7b
God promised the Israelites that “…I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh” Ezekiel 36:26 …hearts which are yielding unto God and his teachings. This is a promise to yearn for and may our continuous cry before God be, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See, if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”Psalms139:23-24
