Lot, nephew of Abraham was moving together with Abraham ever since they left the household of Terah, Abraham’s Father. However, a time came and the land could not support them together, for each had great possessions leading to quarrels between the herdsmen of Abraham and Lot. Abraham invited his nephew to choose which side of the land to go to; and Lot looked, ‘saw the whole plain of Jordan was well watered; it was likened to the garden of the LORD’. Lot chose the land and pitched his tent near Sodom. Genesis 13
‘Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD’. (Genesis13:12)
When the time came up for God to judge the land of Sodom and Gomorrah; the angels found Lot seated at the gateway of the city of Sodom. His home was no longer ‘pitched near Sodom; but right within Sodom’. Lot is a leader who led his people close to Sodom. However, after surviving a war in which Lot and all his possessions were captured…for the sake of safety; living right in the city of Sodom seemed a wise idea.
When Abraham bargained with God to spare the city of Sodom for the sake of at least 10 righteous found in the city…he must have had hope that at least 10 righteous people would be found in Sodom, for Lot’s great possessions also included men and women servants. But, Lot had lost his people to Sodom. Only Lot, his wife and 2 daughters were spared from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
It is good to check oneself…As an individual and a leader, are you camping near ‘Sodom’? Have you taken a step towards finding solace into ‘Sodom’?
“Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become ‘fools’ so that you may become wise”. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight…”1 Corinthians 3:18 – 19a.
