The night before Jacob prepares to meet Esau his estranged brother , he is alone after sending off his family and properties ahead of him…in the dark and loneliness, a man sprung upon him. Jacob immediately changed from an apprehensive Jacob to a fighting one. It was a long struggle with no sign of Jacob letting go… “Then the man said, “ Let me go, for it is daybreak” .
There are some struggles in life that one cannot afford to let go…not until victory is on their side; and I believe that is how Jacob felt when he was in combat with this man. Despite the fatigue that he must have been feeling as the struggle progressed on…he kept at it and even when he was told to let go…his response was ‘not until you bless me’.
Unlike Jacob who at the time was holding on until he gets blessed; in our case we have been blessed with a gift of Salvation…a gift the enemy tries to steal at any given or made opportunity. The gift of Salvation is a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The walk of a Christian is a struggle which requires one to contend for their faith so as to become an overcomer who one day will hear … ‘Well done! good and faithful Servant’.
We contend for our faith by holding onto the Truth and avoid doctrines which compromise the LORD’s teaching… doctrines which although have been made acceptable by the world; they are not in line with the LORD’s teaching. Satan specializes in counterfeits … look alike products. “…While everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.” Mathew 13:25. We live in a society which is unbearably permissive… if it feels right or looks right…then it is Ok; and this approach to life is seeping into Church.
How does one get to understand the Word of God or interpret Scripture?
When we meditate upon the Word of God and receive understanding from God … we become alert and avoid the sweeping tide of strange doctrines. The compromising doctrine talks about love, salvation and God; and yet drives people away from God’s true teaching. A true message of God calls people not to the ways of the World…but to repentance and the Way of God.
Christian, be encouraged to take a stand and align your life, thinking and decisions to the Word of God. We are not alone in this struggle … Jesus Christ promised, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Mathew 28:20
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him… As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him. Psalms 103: 11,13.
